Inclining her head, Riune turned and lifted a paw to attract Shansee’s attention. “All done o’er here,” the otter said cheerfully. Shansee made her way to the table and stooped to scoop up their dishes.
“That’ll be forty coppers,” the otter said. The price itself was moderate compared to some places, though to Riune it seemed a great deal of money indeed, and the otter grew a little flushed at the thought of taking another creature’s generosity, even in thanks for her own assistance. Perhaps that wouldn’t please her goddess so much. But Riune remembered lessons taught to her before, including the one about a truly generous spirit always being willing to accept a heartfelt gift as well as give one.
“The food’s amazin’ as always, Shansee,” Riune said finally, dipping her head to the proprietress, who smiled in response.
“Well you’re both welcome anytime. Let me know if you get any good oysters, Rivi, their meat can be hard to come by this time of year,” Shansee said.
“I will,” Riune replied. She smiled at Rylock, happy and content now that her stomach was filled up. It was nice to have conversation, too. She spent a lot of time alone, and a bit of company made a pleasant change.

Rylock watched with a tilt to his head as Shansee cleared the plates. The proprietress seemed to be the only help there. It came as somewhat of a surprise to Rylock. He had thought that there would be more than one taking care of the restaurant. It must be quite the bit of work to be the sole caretaker of the place.
Reaching into his pack, he picked out a talonful of coppers. To his surprise though, an extra item had come along with the coin. A simple iron earring that glinted with a dull glow. A failed project that he had meant to be melted down to be reused. There was not much value to it. The original engraved design had become warped and it was overly heavy due to his using the wrong mixture of metals. Thanks to that though, it was stronger than his usual pieces. It was unlikely to break easily.
Rylock studied the earring, pushing it to the side as he counted the coppers, making sure to have the right amount. Seeing it reminded him of the earrings Riune had worn. Perhaps she would like this, Rylock thought wonderingly. Ah, but she would likely refuse them. Looking up from his counting, his gaze came to rest on Shansee, an idea forming. Mixing the ring in with the coppers, he shifted it to the top of the pile, his talons closed over the pile. I feel it will be best for me to leave before she gets a chance to return it, Rylock thought somewhat absentmindedly. Though he was not one for such an action, it seemed the only way to have Riune accept the gift. "Here you are, Miss, forty coppers," Rylock spoke kindly. Lowering his voice, Rylock spoke again so that Riune would not hear, "Please give the earring to Riune once I have left." Turning to Riune, he gestured towards the ext. "I suppose we should be leaving now." 326 WORDS Will the plan SUCCEED? THANK YOU MALIA TATE FROM ADOXOGRAPHY

Riune sat still as Rylock paid the bill, not wanting to look awkward but mostly failing to seem otherwise. She missed the exchange between Rylock and Shansee, and thusly didn’t see the proprietress take the coins and the earring and slip the latter into her apron pocket. She also didn’t hear Shansee whisper to the smith with a wink, “She comes around often. I’ll make sure she gets it. Thanks for your business,” she added, the last words spoken more loudly for Riune’s benefit.
“I suppose we should be leaving now.”
Riune nodded. She thanked Shansee for the meal and then made her way out into the streets. Shrugging off some of the chill, the otter glanced over her shoulder at Rylock and then paused and waited for him to catch up.
“Hope you enjoyed the food. Thanks for the meal.” She smiled and dipped her head in gratitude. Riune wasn’t sure what the smith would do now, but she expected he probably had a lot of things to do. Perhaps he had things to forge. It must be fascinating, watching him work and craft things out of mere metal and ore. One day, she thought, it would be fun to stop by his forge and watch. If he allowed that sort of thing.

Rylock nodded in thanks to Shansee. Whether Riune decided to melt down the ring, keep it, sell it, or return it mattered not to Rylock. He hoped it would help her in some way. Though it was a failed project, it still held his brand and so would sell for a good sum despite not being sold by him specifically.
Following Riune outside, Rylock looked back one last time at Shansee. Giving her another nod in thanks, he proceeded to meet up with Riune. Perhaps he would come back to this restaurant one day. Next time he was in town perhaps, well maybe not so soon, but later on he would come back for another meal. "Indeed I did and thank you for your help," looking around Rylock noted his location in relation to the places he needed to go. He had spent more time in town than he had originally planned to. It was best he get going now so that he might return to his forge not too late in the day. "Unfortunately, I must be going now. If you care to visit me someday, my smithy is out in Khariva Plains. Do send word if your coming though. It's somewhat of a rough travel and it is a bit hidden so its best if you let me know." With a slight bow to Riune, Rylock opened his wings and pushed off the ground. Gathering some altitude, he circles above Riune before leaving. THANK YOU MALIA TATE FROM ADOXOGRAPHY

Riune nodded. She didn’t mind helping—it was part of her mandate, after all. Accepting Nehrune’s blessing had been one of the most important days of her life, and though she hadn’t met the goddess personally, she’d felt just how great a being she was. Nothing like the tempestuous Sea Riune had served before that.
With a nod, Riune said, “I’ll stop by someday, then,” in regards to his offer of coming to see his workshop. She thought it would be interesting to see it one day, though she couldn’t imagine traveling up to the plains on her own. The way wasn’t easy to an otter who’d never once in her life lost sight of the sea. But it was a nice thought that they might meet again someday.
“Take care,” Riune said, dipping her head in response to the smith’s bow. As Rylock took wing and began to soar in circles over her head, Riune watched him, her expression hard to read. Then, as he faded out of sight, she felt a soft touch on her shoulder and turned to see Shansee standing beside her.
“He wanted you to have this, dear,” she said, holding out a bit of iron twisted into the shape of an earring.
Riune took it in her paw and examined it. “That was nice o’ him,” she said. Taking out one of her brass earrings, she clipped the iron one in place. Then, giving Shansee a smile, she thanked the otter again for the meal and began strolling through the marketplace, feeling the cold a little less than she had before.
