Riune smiled, glad that Carien seemed open to the idea of her tagging along. She hoped she would be able to help. It had been some time since she’d felt driven by purpose. Her small mercies and efforts on Nehrune’s behalf didn’t seem like much at the end of the day, and this was an opportunity for Riune to make a real difference by helping Carien heal others. Carien’s concerns were valid, of course. The healer couldn’t afford to pay Riune’s way, which meant Riune would have to find another way to support herself. Of course, the otter had assumed that much when she’d made the offer to accompany Carien. She had always lived and worked independently, and that’s the way she planned to keep things. Living off another creature, even if that living could be considered a “salary,” didn’t appeal to Riune. Besides, she didn’t need much. A place to sleep at night with a roof was a luxury for her now. Even one meal a day a rarity during the hard months. She was no stranger to hard times. “Ye needn’t be concerned about me bein’ a burden or not bein’ able to rough it. The life o’ a lone fisher ain’t much easier than the life of a traveler, an’ I’ve earned my way travelin’ before. I can work odd jobs wherever we go. If we find ourselves in the wilderness, I know how t’ survive. I’m willing to do what I can, an’ if it doesn’t work out, an’ ye don’t want me along anymore, we can part ways.” Riune hoped Carien would agree. At the very least, the otter wanted to try helping her with her gods-given mission. Perhaps it wasn’t what she was meant to do, and she had misunderstood Mrithun’s words, but there was no harm in trying. Riune had no home. No possessions that weren’t stuffed in the sack now slung over one shoulder. She had no flowering business to leave behind. No one would really miss her. The thought didn’t make her sad. She’d lived this way for long enough to simply accept it as her lot in life. But here was a chance to be part of something more. That was a chance Riune didn’t want to pass up. Carien Carien studied Riune for a few moments. She knew how to fight, she knew how to survive, and she knew how to get herself out of tricky situations. She could fish, she was much stronger that Carien was, and she had a lot of street smarts. And so, if this is what she really wanted to do, obviously, Carien would be better off. It was an offer the little aye-aye really couldn't refuse. "I wasn't worried about you bein' a burden or anything, I just didn't wanna put you out of your way or anything. But if you're sure it won't be causin' you any unnecessary hardship, I'd be thrilled for you to come along." She gave the otter a grin. Perhaps it would be safer and more enjoyable for the both of them. And both creatures would certainly benefit from having someone looking out for them. Lion

With a hardy laugh, the otter ruffled Carien’s ears gently and gave her a warm, whiskery smile, dark eyes glittering with excitement. “Don’t worry ‘bout causin’ me any hardships, little friend. What hardships we’ll face, we’ll face ‘em together, an’ that’ll make all the difference.” Riune nodded decisively. She was sure this was what she wanted, and contrary to feeling apprehensive about leaving her long-time home or nervous about the road ahead, she was simply glad to have the opportunity to do something new and impactful. “With that in mind,” Riune continued with a wave of her paw, “I can still introduce ye to Tiny, an’ we can see about settin’ things up here for as long as ye want to stay. I can help ye fetch things from the woodlands to the west o’ the city, too. Spend a lot o’ time there, so I know me way about.” She wasn’t sure how long Carien planned to stay, and she didn’t mind either way. More time would give her an opportunity to say goodbye to those who’d helped her along, or whom she’d helped at some point. Less time just meant she’d had fewer loose ends to worry about tying up, and that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Either way, Riune knew how to make herself useful, and she could continue some of her own work and help Carien out at the same time, since the woodlands between the cove and the city of Chendri had an abundance of herbs and things that Riune could collect at any point. She’d have to learn more about which plants were helpful, what they looked like, how to dig them up. Riune figured she’d pick it up quick. She had a good memory for little things like that. Carien "Sounds great!" She chirped happily to her new friend. "We can stay a couple weeks or so, till you get all your loose ends tied up. If I have a dream or anything, that may change, but it would be good to have a steady job for a bit, see some new things, find out if there's anything new I haven't learned yet, and get some money in my pocket." She looked at all the creatures around her, all the hustle and bustle, and everything seemed a little less scary, a little more in place. She had someone looking out for her now. "Do you know where I could get a good pack, something lightweight and durable that would fit my size? They forget, sometimes, that animals come in my size, I think." She twitched her whiskers. "Oh, and yeah, the woodlands would be great."Lion

Nodding, Riune gave the aye-aye a smile. A few weeks would allow her time to get things situated, and to see what she could save up as far as travel money went. Might have to invest in a new sack. Something a little more durable than the one she’d used for the past, what, five years? “Sounds good t’me, Carien,” Riune said. She wasn’t sure what she thought about the idea of traveling and seeing new things. It had been a long time since she’d moved anywhere, and before she’d moved here from Shen Cove, she’d never stepped foot away from the shores of her home. While a part of her was a bit nervous at the idea of traveling away from the sea, another part of her felt a bit relieved at the idea. This was her chance to truly put her past behind her. To try to be something else than the lone fisher tied forever to the sea. At Carien’s question, Riune said, “Aye, I can help ye wit’ that. I know a bloke, Reza, he’s pretty good at makin’ things per request. Ain’t too pricey, neither.” Truth be told, most of Riune’s clothes were attempts Reza had made at custom jobs that, for whatever reason, the original purchasers hadn’t wanted. He sold those for extra cheap. Which, to a poor fisher, was just the right price. That was partly why the otter’s clothes almost never fit, though. Might be nice to learn how to sew a little better. Riune could scrape by patching up things but making clothes from scratch? Not really her particular talent. “Jus’ let me know what to look fer, or I can show ye around if’n ye need to look fer yerself.” The otter shrugged. She had been through those woods plenty of times, and probably knew most of the plants pretty well, too. Had stared at them enough and collected a few for Tiny, without really knowing what they did, per se. Janielove OOC: Sorry for the wait. Carien Carien nodded decisively. "Alright, it's settled then." Having a travel companion would be fantastic. She hoped the otter would stay around for a while, though folks rarely did. Most creatures she found weren't accustomed to the lifestyle Carien lived, and found it hard to cope with the constant moving and lack of stability. But she hoped that wouldn't be a problem with Riune. "I don't need anything fancy, just something sturdy, small enough for me, and it'd be great if it had a couple of compartments or something so I could store stuff better. It can wait a few days though, I'll work for a bit to get some coin in my pocket." The aye-aye thought about what was likely to grow in these parts. A lot of weird plants grew in cities like this. There was always some exotic species that had ridden in in the crates the sailors brought back, and lots of creatures kept gardens. Taking a few leaves here and there was hardly noticeable. "I'll go with you here soon one of these days, I'd like to explore a bit myself." Lion OOC: Sorry for the wait, I've been so swamped

With a jovial sort of smile, Riune nodded and patted Carien’s head gently. “We’ll get ye some fine, sturdy clothes, t’be sure. Reza’s the best, an’ he’ll give ye a good price, seein’ as yer a friend o’ mine.” The otter chuckled at the thought. Reza was not the kindest of creatures, and he took some getting used to, but he was loyal to his friends, and had always treated Riune fairly when it came to business. When it came to work, Riune was sure that Tiny would give Carien plenty to do. The ape was always busy with his work, stitching up folks and fighters from the arena. He paid his assistants pretty well, too, as far as she knew. Leastways, he was a kind sort, kinder than his huge appearance and ugly face made him seem. “I’ll introduce ye to Tiny, as well, an’ get ye some work. He’s always lookin’ fer skilled folks, so I can’t imagine he’ll pass ye up on an offer.” Riune shrugged. She’d never asked Tiny for a job before, but he’d certainly talked her ears off plenty of times gabbing on about his work. He tended to do that while stitching up his patients, and she’d been a frequent patient of his since she’d arrived in Chendri years back. “The woods’re west o’ here, an’ I know ‘em well. I can take ye there someday an’ we can gather some plants. Won’t take more’n a few hours to get there an’ back, I reckon, dependin’ on how much ye expect a burly otter like meself to carry.” Riune laughed good-naturedly at the thought. She was used to carrying quite heavy loads, so she was mostly joking. She couldn’t imagine plants would weigh more than a few sacks of fish. If they did, she imagined she’d be able to carry them all the same. Janielove OOC: No problem. We've all got life to contend with! Haha. Word Count: 317 |

Carien "Sounds like a plan," Carien agreed. She was looking forward to meeting Reza, as well as Tiny. "I like to say I'm skilled," she said with a smile, half joking. She's been blessed, so she was obviously pretty good at what she did. She glanced towards the arena. "And I imagine there's plenty of work around here."The aye-aye chuckled when Riune laughed. Certainly, the otter could carry far more than she could. "Maybe I ought to invest in a wagon or something," she replied thoughtfully. " That way neither of us need to carry much of anything. Be good for carrying a poor soul in really rough shape, too." She shrugged. "I don't know much about buying wagons, though. Unless you also happen to have a friend that makes wagons, I don't think I'm in luck right now." She grinned at the otter who seemed to have a friend for everything, and yet didn't have any connections to the city. A curious way to live, indeed. Lion

Though Riune laughed good-naturedly at Carien’s joke, her expression turned somber at the aye-aye’s second comment. “Aye, plenty o’ work indeed. Sailors, fishers scraped up on the reefs, brawlers, an’ the fighters from the arena. Plenty o’ beasts need stitchin’ up, an’ not all can afford to pay much fer it. That’s where Tiny comes in. ‘E could charge ‘em twice as much as ‘e does, but the healer’s got a soft spot fer those hurtin’. I imagine ye’ll get along wit’ him well.” Riune nodded. She knew she could be taking Carien to meet other healers, those with the wealthier clientele, but she didn’t imagine that was what Carien would want. Plus, if the otter was going to be honest, she didn’t have as great a relationship with those healers as she did with Tiny. Riune shook her head and smiled. “Don’t know any wagon-makers, unfortunately. Haven’t really had a need to buy a wagon. But I can look into it while we’re ‘ere. Or ye can just count on me t’ carry things. An’ possibly the wounded, though I ain’t sure I’d be much help with most beasts bigger’n me,” the otter chuckled. She knew of a few carpenters in the area, mostly by reputation, but she’d see if any of them had well priced wagons that would be a good size for an otter to pull. Most likely she’d have to save up a bit of capital first, but between her earnings and Carien’s they might be able to afford something. “I’ll see what I can dig up,” she said finally, her whiskers twitching as she smiled down at her newfound friend. While she had very little means in this life, Riune was good with business, and she was sure she could come up with something workable by the time they had to leave. Janielove Word Count: 313 |

Carien Carien nodded. "I imagine we'll get along very well, then." She thought of the creatures she'd come across who had nearly died because they couldn't afford a healer. She felt that charging more than an animal could pay was a horrid violation of the ethics of any healer, and a mark of an uncaring individual. She worked off of tips, relying on grateful creatures to give her a bit of coin or a meal, whatever they had. If she had to end a creature's life, she always tried to return their possessions to their family or friends, but if that was not possible, she would often bury any clothing, keep the coin, and pawn off whatever wasn't useful to her. It felt someone disrespectful, but if there was no family or close friends, it was her only option, and there was no sense in letting it go to waste. "Sounds great. Secondhand would work just fine as long as it's sturdy, I'm not real picky. And I'll pay at least half, of course." She had coins buried all over the places she traveled. Some were just one or a few coins, gifts to her god, but overall, if she really thought abut it, there was probably enough to keep her in leisure for years. She never carried much on her at any given time, though. Some of the caches had been dug up by other creatures, but she knew where most of them were, and would return to them in lean times. She had used some to buy slaves' freedom, and much of it had been spent on medicines and remedies that she either couldn't make or had a hard time finding. Unfortunately, her nearest cache was a two day's walk from here. No matter, she would try to make enough to buy a wagon, and she could dig more up later. Lion WC: 313

“I’ll find somethin’, I’m sure. I have a nose fer a good deal.” The otter chuckled softly. She certainly had managed to live here on her own for a long time, making a living, which wasn’t always easy. One had to be canny to survive in this city, and Riune had learned to do business well over the years. She had no doubt she’d be able to get them a wagon, hopefully one that would hold a good amount of weight, but would still be lightweight enough for her to pull without too much trouble. Riune had some ideas for where to start, so she figured she’d get on that as soon as she had a spare minute. The fisher stopped beside a shack leaning up against the outer wall of the arena. The sounds of sparring inside set her teeth on edge, but the otter ignored her unease and knocked on the door to the ramshackle building. She could hear scuffling inside, and then the door opened to reveal an absolutely enormous ape with a series of pink scars running from nose to jawline. Squinting down at the otter and aye-aye, the ape gave them a once over and said, “You better not be here for treatment. I told you to take care of yourself for at least a week this time, and it’s only been four days,” the ape said gruffly. “No, Tiny, this time I’ve brought you help rather than more work,” Riune said with a wave of her paw in Carien’s direction. “This is Carien. She’s a right good healer, an’ I know ye could use a nimble set o’ paws ‘round ‘ere.”Tiny stooped through the doorway slightly to get a closer look at Carien, his heavy brow wrinkling. “You’re a healer, are you? Do you have much experience with a needle?” he asked skeptically. The ape glanced sideways at Riune, who smiled back at him in an easygoing way. This made the ape’s frown deepen as he glowered back at the otter. Janielove Word Count: 348 |

Carien "I'm sure you will," Carien agreed with a smile. The otter was nothing if not resourceful. When they arrived at the door, Carien's ears began to twitch at the sounds of the arena. She figured she'd get okay at blocking it out if she hung around a while. The clinic was placed well. Right by the arena, so that a creature injured in a match could be quickly treated. She studied the ape, Tiny, quietly as he and Riune spoke, studying his hands and his scars, and watching how he looked over other creatures. She knew how small she was, and since he was so large, she climbed up the doorway so they could look each other in the eye. And so that he could see her better. And maybe part of it was because she had been on the ground for a really long time and it was stressing her out a bit. "Sir, I've got experience with anything you give me. I've been healing other creatures on my own for 13 years, and I was trained for three years before that in Hethia. I have met with a healer on every continent to learn what I don't yet know, and I once had to make a needle from a long thorn when my last one got too dull to safely use. If you'll have me, I'd love to learn from you as well." It was a pitch she had given many times, especially when she was younger. She had more confidence in her abilities these days, but when she was young, she'd had to prove herself quite often, especially as an aye-aye, and especially with Mrithun's feather on her paw. "I need a job for a couple of weeks while I stay here. I'm a hard worker, and I'm happy to do whatever you need me to do. "Lion WC: 311

“Hrm,” was Tiny’s response to Carien’s words. He crossed his arms and squinted through his small, dark eyes at the aye-aye. “I suppose you’ll have to do. I’ve got more scratches needing stitches than I have hands to sew up. Won’t be easy work, but I’ll give you fair pay if you prove useful. Come on inside and we’ll talk.” The ape gestured with one large hand for Carien to follow. When Riune moved towards the shack as well, he gave her a dry, though not unfriendly, look. “I thank you for finding me the help, Rivi, but I doubt us two talking shop will interest you much.”Riune blinked and glanced at Carien. She knew she wouldn’t be of much use in terms of arguing the worth of Carien’s skills—the aye-aye could likely handle her own affairs where business was concerned—but she wanted to make sure Carien was set and comfortable with the whole situation before she wandered off to deal with her own affairs. The first of which, she supposed, would be speaking to Reza, then finding someone with a decent cart, or the skills to make one at a decent price. The sooner she could get Carien’s clothes and the cart matter settled, the better. That being said, Riune didn’t want to leave until Carien thought it best, so she gave the aye-aye a look that said, Let me know if you want me to come in there, and waited on the healer to give her instruction on that score. Carien "Don't need easy work, so long as I'm helping someone." Carien twitched her nose and scampered down to follow the ape. When he stopped Riune, though, she looked back at the otter. She twitched her whiskers, then shook her head subtly. "I'll meet you back at the alley where we met in a couple hours. I've got a few things I need to look into after I leave here." She gave her an easygoing, confident smile. She was in her own element now, she could handle herself pretty well. The little creature was used to being underestimated and having to prove herself. She dipped her head to Riune, then slipped inside behind Tiny. Lion OOC: Sorry this is so insanely short, I've got a lot of homework and wanted to go ahead and get something up

Tiny nodded slightly, the gruff-faced ape’s small indication of approval at the aye-aye’s words. “Come on in, then, and we’ll discuss things.” The huge ape didn’t have to move much to make room for Carien, since the other creature was so small. Riune watched as Carien turned to join him, and then stopped to address her. “I’ll meet you back at the alley where we met in a couple hours. I’ve got a few things I need to look into after I leave here.” At Carien’s words, Riune nodded and took a step back. “I’ll see about making some arrangements on my end, too. Good luck.” The otter flashed Carien a warm smile and then turned to rejoin the light flow of traffic through the streets. As the otter disappeared into the crowds, Tiny turned his attention back to Carien. “All right now. Let’s talk business.”Janielove OOC: I think at this point we’ve got things pretty wrapped up for this thread.
