Carien The aye-aye's ears twitched back at the faint sounds coming from the arena. She knew a lot about many of the creatures there; she had often snuck in under the cover of night to help those misfortunate enough to lose a battle. It frustrated her that animals could treat other animals that way, and to be honest, most of the animals who's lives she had taken had been slaves horribly injured and desperate. It was the only freedom she could give them. She'd seen a battle once. It was a punishment round, designed to make the lesser slave in the ring learn their lesson. It was a horrific, loud, bloody thing, and Carien had snuck back afterwards. That poor young creature was one of the first she ever killed. It wouldn't have survived much longer, and was in horrible agony. But Riune's voice brought her back to the present, and she perked up again. "Oh, definitely. Even the dirt we kick off our feet at the end of the day can be used to grow plants." She thought about all the creatures she had learned from, and briefly thought of the day she got her powers, and the young leopard she had saved. What had become of her? She looked up at Riune and smiled. "I try to do the best I can with what I have available." Then her ears perked up a bit, in a happy sort of way. "Have you ever had a chance to meet the goddess Nehrune?" She thought that it would be an interesting story to tell, but she couldn't quite figure out why her mind was so focused on it lately. Riune didn't particularly remind her of the leopardess, so it was interesting. "Every life I can save makes every heartbreak worth it, and every creature I can help at least a little soothes the ache a bit, so it's worth it, for sure. As long as I keep learning, and never decide that I know enough, then I think I'm doing well. If I just stopped, I don't think I could live with myself."Lion WC:353

Carien’s words caused Riune to smile. She imagined she’d have a lot of dirt to kick off her feet, so she supposed she was leaving a whole trail of helpful plants strung from here to the coast, as she walked the forest paths often. The thoughts amused the otter, and her whiskers twitched good-naturedly as she chuckled. In response to Riune’s praise, the aye-aye said, “I try to do the best I can with that I have available.” Then she paused and asked, “Have you ever had a chance to meet the goddess Nehrune?”The otter laughed. “Not in person. But…” A memory flashed across Riune’s mind, of a kind creature with compassion written in her gaze. She’d had a soft smile, a gentle touch, and her guidance had brought Riune through the darkest time of her life. “Sometimes I wonder if some who follow her don’t count,” the otter finished with a gentle smile. She often felt that those who lived their god or goddess’ tenets were their representation in the world. Not every follower ever got to see the one they committed themselves to, but they saw and conveyed their god to others, and that was what mattered in the end. Riune nodded as Carien spoke again. The otter thought she did understand the drive that kept the little healer going. In a way, she wished she could fulfill the same drive to help others, but she had so little to offer them. “I hope ye don’t stop, then,” was all the otter said, and she said these words kindly. She found that she rather liked the creature at her side. It had been a long time since she’d felt comfortable speaking this way with another creature. She hoped Carien would remain in the area for some time. Janielove OOC: I want them to be best friends forever. Riune is going to follow Carien everywhere now LOL Word Count: 310 |

Carien "I would agree," the little creature replied. "I feel that that's the goddess's mission, to create more of herself. She embodies mercy and justice, and I feel that gods and goddesses of ideals show themselves in their close followers. I had the privilege of meeting the goddess once, though. I was also blessed with meeting the goddess of the earth. It was the day I saved my first creature. The god of death appeared to her that day as well, to show her that her time was not yet done, and he thanked me for easing his workload." The aye-aye chuckled, her whiskers twitching. "And I see the goddess in every butterfly I come across."
Then she looked at the otter, her normally bright eyes suddenly serious. "What do you know of the slave trade in Chendri?"Lion

Riune’s eyes widened in surprise. To have seen a goddess in the flesh, let alone multiple gods and goddesses, was not unheard of, but Riune had never known anyone who claimed to have met them. What must that have been like? Death and Earth would be one thing, Riune supposed, but she couldn’t imagine meeting Nehrune face to face. The otter owed so much to the kind, just goddess, would she even be able to speak if she stood before her, plain and simple and unimportant as the fisher was? “That would be incredible. I envy ye, seein’ yer faith realized, in a sense. I can’t imagine what that must’ve been like.” The otter shook her head in wonder. She gazed at the small creature beside her with greater admiration than before. She hadn’t realized just how special this little healer was, but she was beginning to sense that there was more to the aye-aye than met the eye. Carien’s next words drew a frown from the fisher. “It ain’t as commonly practiced ‘ere, but don’t let that fool ye. Chendri is where most slaves come in t’port from other continents an’ they’re sold ‘ere to those wot keep slaves in the Kingdom Between the Twins or in Rynidaan. A few slaves also end up in the arena here, though e’ryone claims it’s voluntary. Can’t imagine any creature volunteerin’ to be slaughtered, though. For sport.” The otter’s whiskers twitched in anger as she walked. She knew that Tiny helped stitch up some of the arena competitors, and she supposed he might have more firsthand knowledge to share with Carien. All the otter knew, she’d learned from observation, which, she supposed, didn’t count for much in the end. “Why did ye want to know?” Riune asked curiously. She didn’t imagine Carien was interested in participating in the slave trade. But why would she care? Perhaps she’d heard that healers were needed for the combatants of the arena who managed to survive their matches. That would explain her interest, the otter supposed. JanieloveWord Count: 346 |

Carien "It was wonderful," she agreed with a nod, her eyes dreamy and her face serene. "Our shared goddess takes the form of the most beautiful blue butterfly, and she radiates this sense of calm, that everything you're so worried about will be settled in due time. She's the sort of guiding light that brings rest and a reprieve, and strengthens you for the journey ahead. It's the most wonderful feeling, and that's what I hope to give to others. That was the day I got my gifts, too." The aye-aye's ears twitched back, along with her whiskers. The noises from the arena were making her head hurt, but she also felt pulled in that direction. It wasn't right, for animals to fight like that for sport. She scanned the parts of the city she could see, studying every face (though, admittedly, it was hard to see any faces from her height). "It would seem that one would only volunteer if they knew they'd win, their family would benefit, or there was another worse fate that it kept them from." She swiped her paw across her face, then tugged at her whiskers in frustration. " Is there a way I could help them? I don't want to be patching creatures up just to send them off to fight a fight they don't want to fight, it seems so cruel." It seems more kind to let them die than let them live a life of suffering and fear. The voice in her head took on many of the qualities of her birth god, Mrithune's, voice. The thought was hers, but it stemmed from her link to him. I don't like it. Suffering should be eliminated, and this is something causing suffering that I can't heal, but I can't kill every slave, that would be just as cruel. Mrithune, what do I do?Lion OOC: Carien is hoping for a sign from Mrithune WC:311

Mrithun - God of Death Do not seek death. Death will find you. But seek the road which makes death a fulfillment. The ravens were helping a very large but extremely slender creature. The black birds were circling the creature and diving to get even closer as they dropped what looked like shadows and flickers of light around the creature. Death lifted his hand and gently picked up each shadow or flickering light. These particular ravens never stopped working. To the favored ones on Paradiastole, Death's ravens appeared to be no different than the Unmarked ravens of the mortal world. But his were special, with the abilities to move between worlds and when they were in the mortal realms, they could disappear and become ghosts or spirits (As the mortals would call them.) in order to collect the souls.
Yes, Mrithun would collect the souls himself as he often did but even a God deserved a break now and again. Though he always personally collected souls that were of importance whether they had done great and wonderful things or terrible and painful things. How he appeared to each was up to the life they had lived. They always had and have a choice. Mrithun did his best to not meddle in the lives of the mortals. Most of the times when he had, it had been at the request of the other gods and goddesses or if some mortal would end up being one of the 'greats' if they made the right choices. Mrithun had no control over what the living did; he only could cause death or prevent one from dying. The latter one was very tricky to pull off because it required his twin to be present at the exact same time as well as both being in complete agreement. The mortal also had to be a very strong possible 'great' with a pure soul. This refusal on his part and resurrection on his sister's part had only happened a handful of times in the last couple centuries. Plus father and mother really hated when the two teamed up like that. Mrithun chuckled at the memories, as younger versions of themselves, Marainen and himself had gone through a couple decades where they were resurrecting mortals left and right. Fun times.
Mrithun, what do I do? A whisper resounded with the strength of all the gods voices combined. The voice was as clear as crystal in his mind. It was his favorite favored one. Wasting no time, Mrithun and a few of his ravens gently put all of the souls they had been gathering away where they would be safe (Varaanis liked to sneak in and hide a couple in order to try to get Mrithun to lose his temper and cause mass murder on the mortals.) and then the massive creature morphed and shifted into a shape exactly like his precious ravens. "Come, we are needed." Then with a single beat of his new wings, Mrithun entered Paradiastole. It did not take long to find Carien. She was with an otter who looked very much alive and well. That was odd, what was his favorite doing? Quickly 'rewinding' the conversation, Mrithun understood with a sad sigh. Yes, he knew this would come up with Carien soon. It always did eventually and his answers were never liked.
Landing as a mob of Unmarked ravens would do, Mrithun asked his ravens to stay there while he took flight again to land closer to the two. This was not the first time the God of Death had seen Carien. There had been one other time; a special time even among the gods. His eyes appeared all silver, one would have thought this raven blind if he had not also been glowing ever so slightly. His voice was deep but soft as it always was with his favorite one, "Riune, it is nice to meet you. It is always good to see you, Carien, my child. I understand that the issues you discuss are strenuous and painful but I cannot offer much advice, young one. What is it that you seek?"

Studying Carien’s expression, Riune felt a deep-rooted wish form in her heart to see what the aye-aye had seen. She imagined what it would be like to meet Nehrune, to behold her grace and her serenity, and to experience such a potent peace as Riune knew the goddess must give to those who beheld her. Though no one had ever accused Riune of being “pious,” per se, she knew that even a rough-and-tumble, inarticulate otter could only be awed in such a presence. “I’m sure you do give ‘em that feelin’. That’s what those gifts’re for, eh?” Riune had only one gift, given also by the goddess of Mercy. It had been the touch of another follower, however, that had bestowed the gift. Riune supposed she’d experienced a fraction of what Carien had in that moment, and the thought brought a small smile to the otter’s face. The smile faded as talk of slavery and the arena turned such thoughts from the otter’s mind. Slavery had always bothered the fisher, as it was a shadow that every poor creature in the Kingdom Between the Twins grew up fearing. The brutality of the arena left no question in her mind of its evils. “I s’pose ye must be right. I wish I knew a well to ‘elp, as well.”As the otter withdrew into silent contemplation, she became aware of the sound of cawing ravens. Curious, the fisher turned and watched as a flock of birds descended on them. Eyes widening, Riune listened as one of the ravens spoke, one with shimmering, blank eyes that seemed to stare into her soul. Mrithun. God of Death.Riune looked down at Carien. This creature… She was a favored child of more than one god. She was special. No other creature Riune had ever met could claim as much. The fisher shook her head. To think, she normally would’ve just passed the tiny creature in the street without noticing her. Maybe I did notice her for a reason, the otter thought. She remained silent and watched the exchange between Death and his follower, her expression hard to read. JanieloveWord Count: 362 |

Carien "That's the hope. It truly was a remarkable experience. I pray you'll know the fullest extent of that peace one day." It was clear in her voice that she understood how rare an experience like that was. "I know the goddess would enjoy your company. I believe she'd find you quite endearing." The aye-aye rested a paw on the otter's side. Carien's mouth twisted, and she was about to say something else when she heard the sound of ravens behind her. She knew that sound, and her tail started to wave back and forth. She hadn't expected a direct answer from him at all. She knew he heard her prayers, of course, but she figured he'd be more subtle than to just appear like this. She was a little worried that her new friend would disapprove of a healer who was blessed by the god of Death, but to be fair, Mrithun could bring back creatures from the dead. It wasn't as if he was a dealer of death. "It would appear you will meet at least one god today. I know this probably isn't how you planned to spend your day. Meet my birth god, Mrithun, god of death, brother of Maraninen, goddess of earth, and father of Nehrune."When he called her his child, she felt warm and fuzzy all over. She felt so at home with Mrithun. He was, after all, her birth god, and he reminded her a bit of her father. "It's so good to see you as well, father. How are things with you?" He asked what was bothering her, and it took some restraint to keep from pouring out all of her struggles to him. "It's hard to understand why creatures would cause other creatures to fight for sport. Do you know of any way I could help them without just patching them up and sending them right back out to fight to the death again? Or do you know anyone I could ask for help? Certainly, it seems Nehrune may know, but I'm not exactly a vigilante warrior, I'm a healer. It almost seems as though healing a creature to send it to fight causes more suffering than it relieves." But I can't just kill them. That wouldn't be much kinder. She trusted Riune, and she certainly trusted Mrithun, but there were some thoughts she couldn't speak out loud. Mrithun - God of Death Do not seek death. Death will find you. But seek the road which makes death a fulfillment. TAG: Lion, Janielove. WORDS: 344. NOTES: Eeek, I love him already!! As soon as the God of Death entered the realm of the living souls, the whispers that he constantly heard (and could ignore as background noise (with varying degrees based on severity) in the immortal realms) became difficult to ignore. The closer a dying creature was to Mrithun's mortal body, the louder their soul was in his head. It is said that the Old Gods intended for this ability to be helpful in retrieving souls on time but it mostly just gave him a headache or migraine depending on the proximity and quantity of souls.
Despite a few, his mind was relatively clear enough to focus on Carien with ease. Mrithun found it slightly amusing that Carien was asking how he was doing but the compassion in her question moved him. It reminded him of how Kleis used to talk to him. "I am well, child. Death said simply as he listened intently to his favorite one. One to always answer questions directly, Mrithun spoke even softer than usual, "I cannot help with what you seek. Being a servant of Death as well as a healer means that you must find balance, my child. As Death, I cannot stop fighting. I can only collect the souls of those lost as a result." The God of Death silently added to Carien, "You will know when it is the right time for mercy killings, my daughter. Do not fear showing compassion and restoring dignity by offering a smooth death."
Turning his long beak towards Riune, Mrithun blinked slowly at the otter. His words were more for Carien but now also included the otter. "As far as the bigger picture, your destiny is already intertwined with ones who will give what you seek. You all have a part to play if you listen closely to what you already know." Suddenly turning back to the aye-aye, the God of Death flew into the air and all of his ravens circled the otter and Carien as Mrithun faintly touched Carien's head with his beak affectionately before the ravens disappeared.

Riune smiled. “I ‘ope so, too.” She’d experienced peace since converting to serve Nehrune rather than her Birth Goddess, Sharysaan, but Riune wondered what it would be like to experience Nehrune’s presence and feel that peace firsthand. It must have been thrilling. Though Riune wasn’t sure what she would do if more than one god alighted on her at once. She wasn’t half as clever or skilled as Carien, Riune was just a simple fisher. She thought that she probably wouldn’t handle that sort of situation as well as Carien clearly had. As Death came upon them, Riune found her suspicion to be mostly true. Her head reeled and she fought her instinct to take a few steps back. Death, she knew, was not in and of himself something to fear. He did not bring about the end of a creature’s life, necessarily, but he saw to their spirits after they passed on. That was not something bad. At least, the otter didn’t think so. Glancing at Carien, Riune listened as she introduced the god. Father of Nehrune. That’s right, Riune thought. Death was the father of Mercy. In some ways, what he did was merciful. That thought comforted her, and she at least attempted to relax out of her rigid stance. I’m not exactly a vigilante warrior, I’m a healer…” The words echoed in Riune’s head as she listened to the exchange between Death and the aye-aye. The otter wasn’t sure why the words bothered her, but as she rested one paw thoughtfully on the pommel of her dagger, she frowned and turned slightly to look at Carien. Here was this tiny creature, all alone, wanting so desperately to do something to help. And did she have no one else to help her? No one to protect her? That didn’t seem right. Here was a special creature, someone touched by the gods, who called Death her father. It didn’t seem right that she didn’t have anyone looking out for her on this plane. When Death turned to partly address Riune, his words had an obvious impact on the otter. Riune’s eyes widened, her grip on her pommel tightened, and she took in a deep breath. Your destiny is already intertwined… Perhaps that is not what Death meant, but Riune had a feeling she understood beyond those words, all the same. The otter nodded, ever so slightly, and watched as Death flew off with his flock of ravens. Turning to Carien, Riune stared at the aye-aye for a few moments before she said, “So… does this happen often to ye?”JanieloveWord Count: 442 |

Carien
Carien nodded, listening intently to the silver-eyed raven. "I cannot stop the fighting, I can only collect the souls lost as a result." Then, silently, "You will know when the time comes. Do not fear showing compassion and restoring dignity by offering a smooth death". That was her answer, she supposed. "Thank you, Father," she replied, brushing her head against his beak as he disappeared. If she found any coin today, she would bury some as an offering to him. She turned to Riune, who sort of looked like she'd seen a ghost, though Carien supposed that, in some manner, she had. The aye-aye knew that even the most level headed creatures sometimes because a bit... spooky around Mrithun. But Riune seemed to have kept her head about her. She smiled up at the otter, slightly concerned that her new friend wouldn't understand, but hopeful she would. "Often? I mean, I suppose more often than most creatures, but not really. This is the second time he and I have met. It's the fourth time I've met a god or goddess, but the first three were all together. The first creature I healed was when I was 10. I came upon a young leopardess, hardly more than a child, no more than five or six years old.. There was a bear with her, but he wasn't as badly injured. She was near death. I tried everything I knew to try, but she wasn't responding. She'd lost too much blood, and infection was beginning to set in. I prayed to the gods for guidance, or at least for a quick, painless death for the child. They answered my prayers by sending Mithrun, Nehrune, and Marainen. When Mithrun and Marainen are together and in agreement, they can prevent a creature from dying, which they did for the child, then they decided they'd help me as well. Mrithun, my birth god, gave me the ability to move about quickly in the shadows, so I could quickly get to where I'm needed and get out of danger. Nehrune gave me peace with myself and the choices I would have to make, and she gave me the gift of empathy, so I could always knew what was wrong. And Marainen give me the gift of healing, so that I could fix what was wrong."
"Mrithun is a very active god, and he tries to be very involved in the lives of his truly devoted followers. Any proper healer has to make peace with death at some point of another, and sometimes, if there's a creature that I can't help and is suffering terribly, I'll do what I can to ease their pain, and if there's no chance of them getting better, I'll give them a quick, painless death."She smiled up at the otter, tail waving back and forth. "So, yeah, that's my story. I've been trying my hardest ever since."Lion Vera WC: 485 OOC: Backstory!

Listening to Carien’s explanation intently, Riune wondered to herself how she would have handled so much pressure and expectation at such a young age. Only ten, the otter thought, and already three gods had approached her and blessed her with great ability. Though her own power was inconsequential at best, Riune could feel it stirring within her, and through that bond to others she felt some of the excitement and hope and joy wound up in the little aye-aye’s body. Riune understood how the three gods worked in tandem, Life for healing, Mercy for those who suffered or could not be helped, and Death to care for those who passed on. It made sense, more than Riune would have thought if she’d simply been told a healer worshipped the god of Death. It didn’t bother the fisher in the least. “Sounds like you’ve been workin’ hard, indeed,” Riune said, gently ruffling the creature’s ears in an affectionate way. Head tipping to one side, Riune contemplated her next words for a moment, her expression serious. “Ye must travel a lot, seein’ as how ye don’t come from these parts. Couldn’t ye settle down, make a clinic or somethin’?” She found she was very curious, indeed, to know the answer. It seemed like it would be safer to stay in one place, but clearly that was not how Carien operated. She was so small, too… “Do ye also travel all by yerself? Is that… safe for ye?” Riune asked softly, her expression showing her concern. She felt protective of the little healer. Good creatures like Carien were hard to find, and the aye-aye did good work, that was clear. Special, indeed. Riune was sure she’d never met any creature as important as to have the attention of three gods. Beyond that, Carien had a good heart, something that Riune definitely valued, perhaps more than the rest. Riune wondered if there was something she could do to help Carien. Beyond showing her around the city and telling her who might need the skills of a healer. What sort of help could a simple fisher offer? Well, she was tough, burly, knew how to handle herself. She wasn’t an elephant or anything, but Riune figured she could help protect Carien, if the aye-aye ever worried about that sort of thing. Perhaps she didn’t. Perhaps she wouldn’t want a protector. But Riune felt that she would offer. She’d never imagined she’d travel again or wander beyond the shores of Atheraan, yet something about this healer made her think she’d be willing to do that to keep her safe. Carien Carien brushed her head up against Riune in response to her ruffling her ears. "I feel led to wherever I go. I feel that the gods and goddesses guide my path, and many of the creatures I heal are those I happen upon in my travels. If I set up a clinic, I'm sure I could help some, but I don't have the money for it, and even if I did, those I help are generally in very dire shape, and often couldn't get to a clinic. I'm happy to settle down for short periods of time, a few weeks, maybe a month or two, but I'm far too restless to stay in one place for much longer."She thought about the next question for a few moments, but she knew she needed to be honest with the otter. She didn't want her to worry, but she couldn't lie. "Uh, yeah, I'm usually alone. And some creatures are pretty suspicious of me, cuz some people see my species as an omen of death, so I'm been captured a few times, and some creatures are pretty mean. But it's not a big deal, I can travel through the shadows thanks to Mrithun, so as soon as it turns night, I'm in the clear again." It wasn't ideal, of course. Being captured wasn't terribly fun, and lots of creatures had threatened to kill her, but it was what it was, so she couldn't, wouldn't, complain. She did enough good to balance out the stress of it all and make it all worth it. She worshiped and prayed and devoted herself to her gods and goddesses, and so she believed that if she ever got into a really tight spot, they'd get her out safely. But she couldn't deny that having a friend in her travels would be nice. WC: 307 Lion

Riune nodded slightly. She wasn’t sure she fully understood Carien’s wanderlust, as she had only ever lived in two places. There was much of the world Riune hadn’t seen, though that had never bothered her much before. She could see Carien’s point, though. Wouldn’t it be better to travel, to go where one was needed, rather than expect those in need to come to you? So it seemed Carien did work and travel alone. That thought nagged Riune. Here was such a kind, compassionate, dedicated creature just trying to do her work, and others had the gall to bother her? Why? Because of what she looked like? “Captured?” Riune echoed softly. Her paw reflexively clasped around the pommel of one of her daggers. Not again, not on my watch, the otter thought to herself. Turning to Carien, Riune fixed her with a steady, thoughtful gaze. “Ye shouldn’t have to travel alone and fear capture. Ye’re doin’ good work. Perhaps Mrithun was right—perhaps destinies do intertwine, when there’s a need. If ye need someone to stand beside ye, I may not be a knight or a soldier, but I’m plenty able. I’ll go with ye. Help keep ye safe while ye do yer work. If—if you want.” The fisher dipped her head slightly. She couldn’t claim to be special enough to warrant Carien’s acceptance of her proposal, but she wanted to offer all the same. If Carien wanted someone to help her, to travel by her side and try to keep her safe, then Riune was willing to be that someone. JanieloveWord Count: 266 |

Carien
The little aye-aye's ears perked up at her offer. "I'd love to have you with me. Having a friend along would be wonderful, and you're certainly much stronger than I am." But soon, the practical part of her mind started trying to sort out the details. She was used to the life she lived, and the risks were just a part of who she was. This creature, who she had only just met, was offering to come along as protection. And incredibly kind offer, but how would her new friend support herself? Riune was an otter, a fisher by trade. Carien hardly made enough to support herself, much less another, and Riune didn't seem to be terribly well off either. Sure, Riune could fish and feed herself, and Carien could take care of both of them if anything happened, but Carien traveled and mostly slept in trees. She didn't have a home or a safe place to go back to. "But I don't suppose there's much demand for a traveling fish-monger, and I don't know that I could provide steady income for ya... I wouldn't want to be the reason you fell on hard times."
